About this Course

Welcome!

This course came about after the surprisingly positive and successful year during which I taught piano (and other subjects) using a combination of digital material and live feedback.

Videos and other content are available to be consumed whenever convenient for my students and they receive feedback from me along the way.

Win win !!!

Module 4: Playing by Ear

In addition to playing by rote, you can play by EAR!

Read Music, Understand Music Theory, and Play the Piano

This course is designed for busy people who want to learn how to read music and play the piano using both digital resources AND personal guidance and feedback. Win-win!

But why should you take this course with me? Now? Let me explain that to you!

I have been playing the piano since I was six years old. I started teaching when I was fifteen. So I've taught hundreds of people to play the piano. I call them my piano family. 🥰🎹

I got my Bachelor of Music at the University of Maryland under the tutelage of Nelita True, which truly altered my life.

I got my Masters of Music in piano performance at the University of Colorado in Boulder where I studied with Larry Graham. Another extraordinary gift.

Finally I got my DMA in Performance Practice at Stanford University.

While at Stanford, I was asked to teach a Music Theory class. I begged them not to make me teach it as I am a PIANIST, not a music theory teacher, AND I was going to have to teach brilliant Stanford undergrads. 🤯 They ignored my pleas. 🙃

I had always felt that theory classes were quite boring so I made it my mission to make the class am absolute pleasure. I wanted the students to LOVE music theory. Guess what? It worked!

I ended up winning the Centennial Teaching Award, given to only one TA in the whole Humanities Department. This award is decided upon by voting from both the faculty and the students. I was over the moon!

I also played violin - in orchestra and chamber ensembles - until 18 years of age.Even sat first chair my senior year of high school. ☺️

I know basic guitar and a bit of flute.

I have accompanied dance classes and choirs and individuals - mostly string players and singers, for forever. 😊

I feel so fortunate to have spent my life in the musical world.

And I am so grateful that I can now teach with a lifetime of experience under my belt. Great for me, great for my students. 😊

I can't wait to guide you on your musical journey!
